Summer is on its way, and if you aren’t already getting your home ready for the hottest months of the year, you should be. Part of those preparations includes making sure that your air conditioner is in good condition. Maintenance is an important part of that, but it’s not the only thing you can do to make sure that your home is ready for summer. Let’s take a look at zone control, and the advantages it provides.
A zone control system is a series of large valves, called dampers, which are installed at various points in the home’s ductwork. Each damper can open or close to direct the flow of air through the ducts. A thermostat is installed for each “zone” that these dampers create. When a thermostat detects a need for air conditioning, it opens the appropriate damper and activates the air conditioning system.
Advantages of Zone Control
Centralized air conditioners have a couple of different problems, mainly related to their one-size-fits-all method of output. Because a central air conditioner can only be on or off, it doesn’t have the ability to modulate output for each room’s needs. Empty rooms get just as much output as occupied rooms, even though they don’t need it. Some rooms that may warm up or cool off faster than other parts of the house may develop hot or cold spots. Zone control allows you to change how much cool air each part of your home gets, depending on its needs. With a zone control system installed, you can not only make your air conditioning system more energy efficient, but your home more comfortable as well.
