When to Install a New Heat Pump

September 25, 2023

As the weather continues to heat up, you’re going to start to rely on your heat pump more often to keep cool during the day. If your system is not up to the task of keeping you cool through another summer, though, it’s a good idea to replace it now. You don’t want your system to die on you in the middle of the hottest season of the year. If you’re not sure whether or not it would be a good idea to replace your heat pump system, have a look at some of the tips below.

Unusually High Monthly Bills
As a heat pump gets older, it accumulates more and more wear and tear. Eventually, this wear and tear causes a substantial decrease in the efficiency of the system. As the heat pump loses the ability to cool the home as effectively, it is forced to operate for longer periods of time in order to compensate. That longer operating time is what causes your monthly bills to creep upward. If your heat pump appears to be costing significantly more from month to month than it used to, you should have a professional examine it to see if it needs replacing.

High Repair Needs
Heat pumps, like all climate control systems, develop repair issues every once in a while. However, a normal heat pump shouldn’t need repairs more than once every few years or so. As a heat pump nears the end of its lifespan, though, the parts inside it become more and more prone to breaking down. At some point, they will begin to break down in groups. If you need to repair your heat pump multiple times a year, you should seriously consider installing a new one. As it stands, you’re paying a lot more to replace it one part at a time, anyway.

Old Age
The average heat pump lasts around 10-15 years under ideal circumstances. You might be able to get a few more years of service out of a heat pump that’s older than that, if you’re willing to spend the money on it. However, more often than not it’s far more cost effective in the long run to replace the system with a new one. Older heat pumps that are still in use are far more prone to a variety of costly issues, including those listed above. These often add up to you spending much more on upkeep than if you had just spent the money up front to install a new system. Of course, every individual situation is different. Before you make any permanent decisions, you should consult with a professional to determine the best solution for you.
