Water heaters are put under more strain than almost any other home appliance, due to their construction and the frequency of demand put on them. Indeed, most water heaters operate constantly from the time they are installed onward, keeping a large supply of water heated at all times in case it is needed. This is, obviously, quite stressful on the system. If your water heater does not receive regular maintenance, it will not last nearly as long, or perform as well, as it should. What actually happens during a water heater maintenance appointment, though? Read on to find out.
Sediment Flushing
Even if you don’t have something like hard water in your home, sediment can still build up in your water heater storage tank. If allowed to build up for long enough, it will eventually act as an insulating agent, preventing heat from actually reaching the water inside the tank. In order to prevent this from happening, your water heater technician will flush the tank to remove any sediment buildup.
Anode Rod Checking
The anode rod, as you may or may not know, is a long metal rod that protects your water heater from rust. As long as the anode rod is in the tank, it will degrade away instead of the tank itself. The problem is that anode rods will eventually degrade to the point where they cannot protect the tank any longer. At that point, they must be replaced or the tank will start to rust again. During a water heater maintenance appointment, your technician will check your water heater anode rod to make sure that it is still functioning properly. If not, the rod will be replaced.
