Winter is here, and it’s important that you get your home ready for the heating season. If you’re using a forced air system to stay warm this winter, there are a couple of things you can do to make sure that your home is in top operating condition. Zone control is one of those things. Let’s take a look at how zone control works, and how it can help your heating system this winter.
Zone Control
A zone control system is designed to grant you greater control over your indoor climate. It does this by helping you dictate how much output each part of your home receives from the heater. A series of dampers is installed in the ducts throughout the house, splitting them up into zones. Each zone has its own thermostat, which is linked with both the dampers and the climate control systems. When a thermostat requires heat, it activates the heater and opens the appropriate dampers. Only the area with open dampers will receive heat from the system.
Benefits of Zone Control
The big issue with standard forced air systems is that they are unable to change their output levels for different parts of the home. Because of differences in sunlight exposure, insulation, and other environmental factors, applying the same amount of output to different parts of the home will end up creating hot and cold spots. Energy is also wasted on empty rooms, which need no output at all. Zone control prevents wasting energy on parts of the home that don’t need it, as well as making it easier to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the house.
