The SPS Mechanical Inc. FAQ

September 25, 2023

Have you ever thought to yourself, “wow, that HVAC technician really knew their stuff. I wonder if they’ll answer more of my questions!” Well, that’s a pretty common sentiment, but many HVAC companies will guard their industry secrets behind paywalls and service fees. We don’t do that.

The more informed our customers are, the more likely they will be to make sound decisions when it comes to their comfort, their budget, and their technology. We’re in this for the long term, so we want to make sure your questions get answered, even if it’s free!

Well, reading from this blog is free, so why not take a look at some of our most frequently asked questions and the answers we provide for them? We’re just trying to be helpful, and we hope that you’ll ask us any additional questions you might have, as well as call us for air conditioning service in Deptford Township, NJ.

Does My AC Consume Refrigerant?

This is one of the more common questions we get, but we understand where it comes from. Homeowners know that refrigerant is inside of their air conditioner, but they don’t really know what it does.

Well, the answer is no. Your air conditioner is set up with a specific amount of refrigerant to last its entire lifespan, so it shouldn’t ever run out of refrigerant, and it doesn’t consume the material.

However, when your AC needs a refrigerant recharge because it doesn’t have enough refrigerant, this is usually due to a refrigerant leak. Leaks can occur for many different reasons but they always need to be fixed by a professional!

What Is Refrigerant?

Refrigerant is a hydrofluorocarbon, which is a material that can easily switch from gas to liquid with the right amount of pressure. The reason why an air conditioner uses this type of material as refrigerant is because that switch from gas to liquid is what allows the material to gather heat and disperse it.

As the liquid evaporates, it draws heat into it. Then, when the gas turns back into a liquid through condensation, it releases the heat into the atmosphere and away from your home. This cools the air of your house.

Why Does My AC Consume So Much Energy?

Air conditioners have a heavy-duty job to perform. They must cool all of the air in a given area, which requires a lot of energy. The first, most energy-intensive part of the process is the compression which is what actually draws the heat out of your home’s air. Then a blower fan, which is just a large fan system, funnels that cooled air out of your AC unit and into your home.

This process is energy-intensive, but it’s actually less energy-intensive than heating a home through conventional methods.

How Do I Stay More Efficient?

Efficiency depends on a lot of different factors. The bare minimum you can do is call our team for repairs when something is wrong with your AC, and invest in a high SEER-rated system to ensure it runs at high-efficiency levels. Also, don’t forget to change out the air filter.

However, you can schedule routine maintenance, take note of specific trends, and even upgrade your home’s thermostat to improve efficiency and save money down the line!
