With summer fast approaching, now is the time to install a new air conditioning system if you don’t have one. Before you go ahead and install a central split system, though, you should consider all of the options. Heat pumps have a wide range of benefits to offer those homeowners who install them. Let’s take a look at how a heat pump operates, and how it can help you stay cool this summer.
Heat Pumps
A heat pump is a split system that looks and operates very much like an air conditioner, with a couple of key differences. There are two units, one installed inside the home and one installed outside. The two are connected by power and refrigerant lines. When in heating mode, the inside unit evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the air in the ducts. Then, the refrigerant gas is sent down the refrigerant line to the outside unit, where it is condensed back into liquid. This releases the heat out of the home. This method of operation is more or less the same as a traditional split air conditioning system. The big difference is that a heat pump contains a reversing valve, which allows it to operate as either a heating or air conditioning system on demand.
Benefits of Heat Pump Systems
A heat pump system does the same thing as an air conditioner, but with the added benefit of offering heating when needed. This potentially saves you thousands of dollars, and quite a bit of space, that would otherwise have to be spent on a dedicated heating system. With a good heat pump installed in your home, you’ll never need another climate control system. Heat pumps are also quite a bit more energy efficient than the majority of climate control systems on the market.
