Tank Vs. Tankless: Choosing a Water Heater

September 25, 2023

Water heaters are pretty much essential for every home. It’s been pretty much unanimous that everyone enjoys living with hot water than without it. However, the way you get that hot water is very much up for debate!

There are two main types of water heaters these days that are both affordable and efficient. Storage tank water heaters are the oldest and most standard water heater systems. These are the common tanks you see in basements and crawlspaces that are insulated to keep heat in.

Then, you’ve got tankless water heaters in Gloucester County. These systems are smaller, as well as more efficient and convenient, but they can cost more to install than tank systems.

This blog will be focused on the main differences between the two systems, and why you might choose one over the other.

The Pros and Cons of a Storage Tank Water Heater

Let’s start with the traditional, most well-known water heater. Storage tank systems have been around for a very long time, and they’re one of the oldest methods known for keeping water hot. Because of this, people are more familiar with them and they’re more common.

Pros

There are two major pros to purchasing a new storage tank water heater.

They’re very affordable. Since they’re common, come in all shapes and sizes, and have been around for a long time, you can get a very good deal on either a gas or electric tank water heater.

They are great for different uses. Does your whole family use water all at once? As long as your water heater has time to prepare and is sized correctly, it’ll have plenty of water to use.

Cons

Here are some major cons to this kind of water heater.

They’re less efficient than tankless systems, due to standby heat loss.

They don’t last very long, because they can corrode from the inside out.

You will run out of hot water when the tank is empty.

The Pros and Cons of a Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters, or “on-demand” water heaters, are less well-known than storage tank systems, but they’re an excellent option for alternative homes. Here are their major pros and cons.

Pros

A tankless water heater has nearly unlimited access to hot water since it heats the water as it enters your home.

It can last for a very long time since it has very limited contact with the water and won’t corrode very easily.

It’s extremely efficient due to it not having to keep water hot while it’s not being used.

It takes up less space than a water tank.

Cons

Here are some unfortunate cons of a tankless system.

It’s more expensive to install than a storage-tank water heater.

It’s not very good at homes that use a lot of hot water all at once.

The Verdict?

So, which system wins? The choice is up to you!

Each system has different pros and cons, as you’ve read, but those matter differently to different homeowners. For instance, a customer with a very tight budget might choose a tank water heater, because it’s going to be a lot more affordable to install than a tankless system. But for others, the tankless unit might be the best fit.
