The days are starting to get pretty warm as we move closer to summer. You may even already be relying on your air conditioner to keep you cool on a daily basis. Along with that extra usage, though, comes a lot of stress on the system. More stress over a period of time increases the likelihood that your air conditioner will develop problems of one kind or another. If you want to make sure that your air conditioner is in the best possible shape by the end of this summer, you should keep watch for symptoms of a problem with the system. Read on to find out more.
Ice
It may seem like a good thing if your air conditioner has ice forming on it during the summer. It’s supposed to keep things cool, right? Actually, this is a pretty big problem caused by the elimination of air flow to a vital part of the air conditioner. The evaporator coil is the part responsible for actually cooling the air in your home by evaporating refrigerant. This lowers the temperature of the air around the coil, and causes condensation to form on it. If the flow of warm air to the coil is cut off, as by something like a clogged air filter, the condensate will freeze and form ice. While the coil is iced over, it will not be able to siphon thermal energy as well and your air conditioner will be less effective.
Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant is vital to the operation of the air conditioner, but it is not consumed by it. The air conditioner recycles refrigerant constantly during operation. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid it needs to operate. This will eventually cause a full system breakdown. Call for repairs if you notice anything leaking from the air conditioner.
