Water heaters are designed to last for quite a long time, especially if they are properly taken care of. No system lasts forever, though. Sooner or later, you’re going to need your replace your system. If you aren’t sure whether or not your water heater needs to be replaced, there are a number of signs to look for.

Very Low Output
Whether you’re using a tank or tankless water heater, eventually you will subject it to enough demand to overwhelm it. If your water heater is consistently having trouble providing enough hot water for even moderate needs, though, you should have a professional take a look at it. Consistently low output might be due to a number of issues, up to and including simple wear and tear. As the water heater ages, it loses more and more operating efficiency until it simply can’t keep up anymore. There isn’t anything to be done in this case, other than replace the system.

Frequent Breakdowns
Water heaters tend to be more resistant to developing problems than systems like air conditioners or heaters. However, they are not immune to issues. You’re probably going to need to repair your water heater more than once over the course of its lifespan. If you need to have your system fixed multiple times a year, though, you should know that level of frequency is not normal. Water heaters that need to be repaired that often are probably pretty close to the end of their lifespan, as parts begin to fail under years of wear and tear.

If your water heater is breaking down that often, you have two choices. You can install a new system now, or you can continue to prop up your old system until it finally breaks down permanently. It is much, much more cost effective to replace your water heater entirely than to replace it one part at a time. It’s also much less frustrating. Nobody likes being unable to rely on their hot water supply.

It’s Simply Too Old
Most of the indicators that a water heater needs to be replaced, aside from catastrophic issues, are simply due to old age. A water heater can last anywhere from one to two decades, depending on individual circumstances. Generally, once a system gets past the age of 15 it will start to trend downhill. The system will develop more issues, become more costly to maintain, and generally experience a growing list of problems until it’s finally replaced. If your water heater is older than 15, it’s a good idea to ask a professional about whether or not it needs to be replaced.
