Improve Your Air Conditioner’s Energy Efficiency With These Steps

September 25, 2023

Summer is when you’re going to be using your air conditioner the most, of course. You’re going to want to take some steps to improve your system’s efficiency, then, both because it will lower the odds of issues coming up, and will save you money in the long run. Have a look at some of the ways that you can improve the efficiency of your air conditioner this summer.

Schedule Preventive Maintenance
The single best thing you can do for the health and efficiency of your air conditioner is to schedule preventive maintenance for it. The added strain of operating during the summer season makes it more likely for new problems to form in the system, as well as making current problems worse. Using the air conditioner more often will also drive up your operating costs by a considerable amount. The best way to avoid this is to schedule preventive maintenance.

A preventive maintenance appointment conducted every spring/early summer will make it a lot easier for your technician to find and fix problems with your system before they get too far. The added energy efficiency from tune-ups will also cut down on the cost of using your air conditioner throughout the summer. There’s no reason to skip scheduling preventive maintenance if you want to get the most out of your air conditioner this summer.

Change Your Air Filter
This should already have been done at your last preventive maintenance appointment, so if you had that done recently then you should be okay for another few months. Even so, though, you need to know about how to keep your air filter clean and functioning properly. The air filter in the system can become clogged if it isn’t changed every three months or so while the air conditioner is in use. If the air filter becomes clogged, it will cut down on the system’s output ability and cause a whole host of other problems down the road. Make sure that you keep your air filter clean while you’re using your system heavily.

Replace Your Air Conditioner if Necessary
Sometimes, no amount of repairs or maintenance is sufficient to keep the system working the way you need it to. If your old air conditioner just isn’t up to the task of keeping your home cool over this summer season, it’s a good idea to replace it now. Possible signs that it’s time for a new air conditioner include unusually high monthly operating costs, frequent breakdowns, and being older than the age of 15. If you’re still not entirely sure whether or not your air conditioner needs to be replaced, consult with a technician to find out for certain. Better to install a new system now and benefit from the added efficiency for longer, than to wait for your current system to break down entirely.
