It can be difficult to tell when your drain system is having problems, primarily because it is designed to be as hidden from you as much as possible. If you know where to look, however, you can identify a need for drain cleaning long before any serious problems develop. The sooner you get your drains cleaned after you notice a warning sign, the better shape your pipes will be in. With that in mind, have a look at these signs that you need drain cleaning.
Slow Drainage
Drain clogs do not occur suddenly. Instead, they build up slowly as waste sticks to the inner walls of the drain pipe. As the blockage gets closer and closer to the center, it will start to restrict the flow of water through the pipe, which will cause the drain to drain more slowly and increase water pressure. So if you notice that your drain isn’t draining as quickly as it should be, call a plumber to have a look at it before it clogs completely.
Bad Smells
Bad smells coming out of your drain could mean a number of different problems, but the most common one is that FOG is stuck in the line. FOG stands for “fats, oils, and grease.” If you pour large amounts of any of those materials down your kitchen drain, they can solidify and form smelly deposits in the pipe. If you have bad smells coming out of other drains in your house, it might be a different problem that needs addressing. Regardless, you should call a plumber to come examine it.
