It’s a safe bet that you’re going to be doing some elaborate cooking at least once or twice in the next couple of months. As friends and family start to gather for the holidays, and feasts of various kinds are prepared, it’s important to take steps to keep your kitchen in good shape. Part of that is making sure that your garbage disposal stays up and running. Read on to find out how to maintain your garbage disposal during the holiday season.
FOG
FOG stands for Fats, Oils, and Grease. These are three of the most common cooking byproducts, and are often poured down the garbage disposal after being used. While these materials are fluid during the cooking process, they congeal as they cool down. This forms a viscous substance that sticks to the inside of the garbage disposal, and can gum up the impeller. Exposure to FOG tends to increase for the disposal during the holiday season. Be sure to throw any FOG you use away, rather than pouring it down the drain.
Bones, Pits, Ice
If you’re carving a turkey, ham, chicken, or some other kind of meat, you are likely going to have some bones or other carcass materials left over. Make sure that you don’t put any of these into the drain. Garbage disposals are strong, but they’re not strong enough to deal with waste of a certain hardness. Exposure to bones and other hard materials can break off pieces of the impeller, so make sure you don’t put them in the disposal in the first place.
