Heating repairs are an inevitability of having a heating system. It’s not your fault, and it’s usually not the fault of your prospective HVAC contractor, but it’s just a reality of life. We put a lot of stress on these systems year after year, and the job they have is absolutely immense. Keeping an entire living space warm throughout the winter for several years in a row is going to at least result in one or two components falling apart. That’s when you should call for repairs.
But there’s a big difference between a once-in-a-while repair and repairs every single year. The first one is going to be unavoidable no matter what heating system you have, while the latter is a signal that your system needs replacement.
Sound confusing? Don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple when you boil it down. Let’s talk about how often your heating in Deptford Township, NJ is going to need repairs and when it’s time to call it quits.
A Worthwhile Repair
We want to state something very clearly–a heating system is going to require repairs at least once or twice in its lifespan. This is normal. The expectations we put on these systems are tremendous so it makes sense if they need a helping hand every once in a while.
Think of these as worthwhile repairs. They’re vital to the success of your home and your heating system and they’re always going to be more affordable than a whole system replacement. It’s also good to take a second and realize that you’re lucky, some repairs can be expensive or spell disaster for the system, so it could always be worse!
An Expensive Repair
While repairs are every once in a while, they can sometimes seem too expensive to be worth it. There are two easy ways to figure this out.
If a repair costs more than half the price of a new heating unit, then it’s likely not worth it.
Also, multiply the cost of the repair by the age (in years) of the system. If it’s more than $5,000, then it’s probably not worth it.
With these rules, you can always tell if a repair is going to be worth the investment, even if it’s an expensive one. If your one or two-year-old system is needing a pricy repair, at least you’ve got almost a decade left with the rest of the system to work with.
A Frequent Repair
If your heating system requires repairs every year, or even more frequently than that, then it’s likely in rough shape. Components in these systems are designed to last for 10-15 years, just like the rest of the system, so if they’re all starting to break down, that might be a clue that something is off.
For instance, an improperly sized heating system will get disproportionately stressed out as it short cycles or runs in strange ways. This will cause some components to barely be touched and others to wear down and require replacement only after a couple of years. Watch out for this.
Basically, if your system is obnoxious and requires frequent repairs, it needs to be replaced!
