Hot HVAC Myths to Dispel

September 25, 2023

What makes these myths so hot? Well, we’re constantly reminded that they exist by homeowners with broken down air conditioners who tried to do something they shouldn’t have. In the information age, one of the most difficult problems to traverse is the issue of easily found—but uneasily vetted—misinformation. This applies through all fields and even right here in the HVAC industry.

What kinds of myths are we talking about? Well, if you keep reading, we’ll get into some details about the myths we encounter all the time. We’re not blaming anyone for falling into this trap, since the correct information can be hard to find sometimes. Before we get started, just remember that if any information seems odd or doesn’t make sense to you, feel free to call us for our professional opinion or AC repair in Deptford Township, NJ.

Myth #1: Your AC Installation Doesn’t Matter

Air conditioners require precision installation services in order to work properly for their service lifespan. If anything goes wrong in that installation process, you could deal with the consequences years down the line. That’s why we push professional installation services over amateur services so much because it makes so much of a difference. If you’re dealing with a repair issue that’s making your head spin, don’t count out the fact that it could have all been started by something that was poorly installed. Seriously, don’t ever count out installation issues being the root of the problem.

Myth #2: Bigger Is Always Better

We see this a lot here in New Jersey. An air conditioner that’s too big for your home is fine, right? That’s not actually the case at all.

Air conditioners need to be sized appropriately for the homes they’re going to cool. This requires complex calculations that figure out the relative air volume of your home and how much energy needs to be consumed in order to cool that volume in an allotted time. This means if you have an air conditioner that’s too big, it’s going to do something called “short-cycling,” where it doesn’t complete a full cooling cycle because it cools your home too quickly. This is actually pretty terrible for the system and its longevity, because it will strain certain parts of the system and leave other parts neglected. Seek professional installation to ensure that your air conditioner is correctly sized.

Myth #3: Finding the Lowest Price

Our culture of consumerism has made it kind of a sport to find the best deal for the lowest price. It’s always a thrill to be grocery-shopping or car-shopping, and finding the product you want for half the price you thought you’d get it for. While we understand how exciting that can be, it doesn’t really work like that in the HVAC world. When you pay for professional service instead of amateur service, you’re probably paying more—but you’re getting someone with certifications, training, expertise, and technical equipment. You’re essentially paying more for someone who really knows what they’re doing, which can mean all the difference to homeowners who don’t know HVAC technology very well. You really do get what you pay for in this industry.

Call us at SPS Mechanical Inc. for top-notch AC services you can count on.
