Got a Plumbing Emergency? Don’t Panic!

September 25, 2023

No one likes waking up at 3 am to find that their second floor is flooded due to a burst pipe. Hopefully, that has never happened to you. If you do have a plumbing emergency of some kind happen in your home, though, you should know what steps to take to make sure it does as little damage as possible. If you act calmly and quickly, you might be able to salvage the situation before it really gets out of hand.
Step 1: DON’T PANIC!
“Don’t Panic!” is the number one thing you need to keep in mind when dealing with a plumbing emergency. If you can keep cool under pressure, you’re going to be a lot better able to cope with whatever plumbing emergency your home is currently dealing with. If you freak out, you’re going to have a much tougher time getting things under control. So, deep breaths, and get to work!
Step 2: Shut Off the Water
The biggest concern with plumbing emergencies is usually water damage. You’re not going to drown or anything if a pipe bursts in one of your walls, but you will have to pay quite a bit in water remediation if you don’t get it under control as quickly as possible. The best way to do that is to find the water shutoff valve in your home and close it. This will prevent the rest of your plumbing system from functioning, of course, but at least it will also prevent the problem from getting worse until you can have a plumber fix it.
It’s a good idea to find out ahead of time where exactly the water shutoff valve for your home is, as their locations are not standardized. You don’t want to be running around looking for while water is flowing down your stairs. Alternatively, you could install an automatic shutoff valve to immediately cut off the water supply if anything goes wrong.
Step 3: Clean Up the Area
Most plumbing emergencies are going to involve water damage in the walls, or under floorboards. There’s nothing that you personally can do about that. You’ll need to wait for a professional contractor to repair any sub-surface damage. One thing you can do, though, is clean up the surrounding area as best you can. Remove any furniture or other objects that might be susceptible to water damage, and mop up any water that hasn’t yet seeped into the floor. It may seem like a minor thing, but every little bit helps. Once all that is done, all you have left to do is call for emergency plumbing services! Your plumber will be able to handle the situation from there.
