Common Heat Pump Problems During Heating Season

September 25, 2023

As we get further into heating season, it is important to keep an eye on the heating system in your home for problems that may crop up. Today, we are going to take a look at heat pumps. Read on for a list of some of the most common heat pump problems that occur during heating season, and when you should call for repairs.

Ice on the Heat Pump
You may notice that the outside unit of your heat pump has ice on it during heating season. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but it can become one. When the heat pump siphons thermal energy from the surrounding air to heat the home, the air temperature around it drops. This causes ice to form on the coil over time, which can prevent the system from gathering more thermal energy. As a precaution, heat pumps are equipped with defrost cycles to melt the ice. However, if your coil is mostly covered in ice it means that the defrost cycle is likely broken. At that point, it is time to call for repairs.

Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the heat pump. Without it, the system could not move heat from one place to another. So a leak in the refrigerant line is a pretty serious issue. If you hear hissing or gurgling noises coming from your heat pump, it probably means that there is a leak somewhere in the refrigerant line. If not addressed, the leak will eventually rob the system of all refrigerant and the heat pump will break down. If you suspect that your heat pump has a refrigerant leak, you should call for repairs immediately.

If you think your heat pump needs repairs, call SPS Mechanical Inc. We provide heat pump services throughout West Deptford, NJ.
