Check These Things Before Calling for Heating Repairs

Typically, when your heating system stops working, the best thing to do is to call for repairs. However, there are certain times that perceived heating problems are actually caused by factors that don’t require professional repair. If your heating system is not working properly, check the following things before calling for repairs.

The Thermostat
The thermostat is the core of any climate control system, so if it is set improperly or having a problem it will absolutely affect the heating system. Check your thermostat to make sure that everything is set properly. If it isn’t, correct it and see if that fixes the problem. If the thermostat does seem to be set correctly and the problem persists, it’s probably located somewhere else.

The Circuit Breaker
If there is a power surge in the home’s electrical system, it can cause the circuit breaker to trip and shut down the heater. Before you call for heating repairs, check the circuit breaker and make sure that it hasn’t tripped. If it has, reset it and see if that fixes the issue. Be warned, though, that if the circuit breaker keeps tripping it’s a sign that there’s some sort of electrical problem in the system. Have a professional examine the system for you if that happens.

The Pilot Light
Gas burning furnaces all make use of some form of pilot light, the system designed to ignite the flow of gas and start the system. If the pilot light malfunctions, the furnace will not be able to actually start. You should be able check the pilot light to see if it’s still burning by looking at the window near the bottom of the system. If it’s out, try relighting it before calling for repairs.
