Air conditioning problems are quite common during the summer, due to the added strain placed on the system by daily operation. Preventive maintenance does a lot to keep the system healthy and lower the odds of serious problems developing, but it’s not a perfect solution. As you use your air conditioner this summer, we highly recommend that you keep an eye out for the following signs that your air conditioner is in trouble. If you notice them sooner, you’ll be able to have the underlying problems repaired before they have the opportunity to cause too much damage.
Leaking Fluid
If your air conditioner is leaking fluid, there’s a possibility that it’s a refrigerant leak. That’s bad news for you, since your air conditioner relies on refrigerant to keep it running properly. The lower the refrigerant level in the air conditioner drops because of a leak, the less able to cool the home the system will become. This will cause a full breakdown if it is allowed to continue long enough, so it is recommended that you call a technician to examine your system as soon as you notice it leaking fluid.
Short Cycling
Short cycling is often caused by an electrical problem in the system, and forces your air conditioner to shut off before it has the chance to complete a full cooling cycle. This obviously has a negative effect on the system’s output capacity, but it also increases the system’s wear and tear. Short cycling makes it more and more likely that the air conditioner will develop other issues, ultimately shortening its overall lifespan. If your air conditioner is short cycling, call for repairs as soon as possible.
Low Air Output
If the air conditioner isn’t blowing as much cool air as it should be, you might have an issue with a clogged air filter or a malfunctioning air handler. If the air filter is clogged, it’s possible that it will also cause ice to build up on the system’s coils. Check outside to see if you can see any ice on the coils. Even if you can’t, it might be a good idea to replace the air filter if you haven’t in a while.
The air handler is the part of the air conditioner that circulates air throughout the system during operation. If the air handler is malfunctioning, the air conditioner may not be able to blow any air at all. You’ll need to have a professional examine the system for you to confirm whether or not that is the cause of your low output issues.
Stay Vigilant
These are just a few of the many different ways that air conditioning issues can present themselves. If you are worried about the health of your air conditioner for any reason, we highly recommend that you contact a professional and have them examine the system to make sure it’s healthy. Better safe than sorry.
