Signs Your Water Line is in Trouble

water-lineOf all the various parts of your plumbing system that serve a vital role, the water line is the most integral. All water that passes into your home does so through the water line. If the water line is in good shape, the rest of your plumbing system will benefit. If the water line is in need of repair or replacement, you will see the effects reflected in the rest of your home. It’s a good idea to be aware of the signs that your water line is experiencing issues, so that you can have it repaired or replaced as quickly as possible. The longer the water line is allowed to struggle, the worse off the plumbing system will be.

Dropping Water Pressure

Low water pressure is almost always a sign that you have a leak or blockage somewhere in the system. If it’s located in a specific part of your home, that’s probably where the issue is. If it’s throughout the entire home, then the problem is likely located in the water line. You should be especially worried if the water pressure suddenly drops off significantly, as that could signal a large rupture in the line.

Blockages are commonly due to lime scale buildup, if you live in an area with a lot of hard water. It could also be due to tree root growth, which is quite a common issue for water lines. Once a root penetrates the line, it will grow and spread until it almost completely clogs the pipe. If you have trees on, or close to, your property, it’s a good idea to be extra vigilant for issues like these.

Mysterious Puddles in the Yard

Your water line likely runs through your front or back yard to get to your home. When the water line springs a leak, the water will often bubble up through the ground to form puddles on the surface. If you have puddles forming on your property, and they don’t seem to be getting smaller, it might be because your water line is leaking. Make sure that you call for repairs if that’s the case.

Skyrocketing Water Bills

You should always monitor your monthly water bills, as they can often serve as an early warning sign that something is wrong with the plumbing system. If your monthly water bills are rising quickly, even though you’re not using more water than you normally are, it might mean that you have an issue with your water line. You’ll need to have a professional check to make sure.

You can also try turning off every plumbing appliance in your home, and then checking the water meter. If the meter is still running, it means that you likely have a leak somewhere in the system. It’s best that you call for repairs right away if you notice this.
