Watch for These Heat Pump Problems This Summer

As you start to use your heat pump to keep cool this summer, you’re going to put the system under more and more strain. That dramatically increases the chances for your heat pump to develop problems of one kind or another. If you want to preserve your heat pump as much as possible, you should be familiar with the signs that it needs repairs. Let’s take a look at some of those problems now.

Frozen Coil
The coil on the inside part of your heat pump is what is responsible for cooling your home. The coil evaporates refrigerant to absorb heat from the air in the ducts. The temperature around the coil drops, and condensation is formed on it as the air cools past the dew point. If the flow of warm air from the ducts is ever cut off, the condensate on the coil will freeze. While frozen, the coil will not be able to siphon heat from the home’s air. The output of the system will drop significantly, and eventually it will break down completely. Call for repairs if you notice ice building up on the system.

Air Handler Issues
The air handler is the part of the heat pump responsible for circulating air throughout your house during operation. This puts a lot of strain on the heat pump motor, so to compensate it’s equipped with oiled bearings. These bearings will wear down over time, causing friction on the system to increase and producing a loud grinding sound. If you hear this sound, you need to call for repairs as soon as possible. Otherwise, the air handler motor may well overheat and burn out.
