Yes, Your Heat Pump Needs Maintenance Twice a Year

Monday, July 18th, 2016

If you use a heat pump to keep comfortable all year round, you may have heard that those systems require more maintenance than the traditional climate control system. This is true, but it often goes ignored by homeowners who think annual maintenance is enough. Let’s take a look at the importance of preventive maintenance, and why heat pumps need it twice a year.

Why Your Heat Pump Should Get Fall Maintenance

Monday, September 21st, 2015

It’s almost time to shut off air conditioners for the year, as we move from summer into fall. If you have a heat pump, though, you are likely going to use it during the winter as well. One of the biggest advantages of owning a heat pump is that you don’t have to have two separate climate control systems. Along with that advantage, though, comes some caveats. One of those is that you need to conduct maintenance twice as often as with other systems. Read on to find out why you need to schedule fall maintenance for your heat pump.

Making Sure Your Heat Pump is Efficient This Winter: Heating Guide

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

If you are using the heating mode on your heat pump during the winter, you may be paying more than you need to in heating costs if it isn’t working efficiently. At SPS Mechanical, we want to make sure that our customers have the tools to ensure that their heat pump is working as efficiently as possible this winter.

Feel free to call one of our Woolwich Township heat pump experts if you have further questions. Meanwhile, here are a few useful tips to help you get energy-efficient heat through the colder months of the year.

  • Understand Your Thermostat Settings: If you are setting back your thermostat manually, you may be causing your heater to run less efficiently on a newer heat pump model with backup heating. This can be more expensive than keeping your thermostat at consistent temperatures due to the multistage settings of many heat pump models today.
  • Remember To Change Air Filters: Check your owner’s manual, but most manufacturers recommend changing filters once a month or as needed. In order to maintain proper efficiency, the airflow must be a certain cubic feet per minute. A dirty air filter can block airflow and reduce the efficiency over time. A technician will test airflow during a routine visit; however, make sure you change your filters often in the winter.
  • Clean Your Heat Pump Components: While you may not realize it, keeping your heat pump clean is part of maintaining efficiency. Dirty fans and other components can restrict airflow (see above tip) and reduce efficiency. If you aren’t sure how to clean your heat pump or what to look for, call one of our certified technicians for assistance.
  • Duct Cleaning: While it may not be right for every home or situation, a duct cleaning for central heating systems could greatly improve efficiency and indoor air quality. Cleaning the ductwork in your home helps improve airflow and provides an opportunity for the technician to check for other issues related to poor design or improper sealing.

Call the Woolwich Township heat pump experts at SPS Mechanical any time if you have questions about how to maintain the efficiency in your heat pump all winter long.
