Signs You Have a Plumbing Leak

It can be difficult to detect leaks in your plumbing system, given that so much of it is hidden from view. This can be a bit of a problem, since plumbing issue can inflict quite a bit of damage before they cause obvious symptoms. Fortunately, if you know what to look for you can identify plumbing problems much earlier. Read on for some of the ways to tell that you have a plumbing leak.

Water Meter

The easiest way to identify if you have a leak in your plumbing system is to turn off all the plumbing appliances in your home, and then to watch the water meter. If the meter is still running, then you very likely have a leak in your plumbing system.

Bills

Similar to the above point, a steady rise in water utility bills is an indication that you may have a leak in your plumbing system. Of course, your bills will go up if you’re actually using more water. For this one, you’re going to need to monitor your bills more closely over a period of a few months.

Loss of Water Pressure

A major sign of a plumbing leak is a loss in water pressure. This could also indicate a blockage somewhere in the pipes. If the loss of pressure is steady over a long period of time, it’s more likely that you have a clog forming in the pipes. If the loss of pressure is sudden, it could mean that you have a pipe rupture somewhere that needs to be addressed immediately. Close the shutoff valve in your water line and call for repairs immediately, in that case.
