Indications That You Need a New Air Conditioner

Summer is here, and that means it’s time to crank your air conditioner all the way up if you want to keep comfortable during the next few months. Not everyone is going to be able to make it through the entire summer with the air conditioner they have, though. If you’ve had your AC for a while, it might be a good idea to replace it before we get too deep into the summer season. You don’t want the system to die on you in the middle of a hot day, after all. Have a look at the following signs that you should probably install a new air conditioner.

Unusually High Monthly Bills
Your air conditioning costs are obviously going to increase the more you use it, especially during summer. If your monthly costs seem to be rising more than would be explained by that added demand, though, you should probably get the system checked. Oftentimes, older air conditioners will begin to lose efficiency as their various parts wear down. This lost efficiency will eventually become severe enough that the system will be forced to operate for longer than usual to compensate. Longer operating times means higher bills. If this is the reason your air conditioner is costing you more to operate from month to month, though, the only remedy will likely be to replace it.

Increasing Repair Issues
If you need to repair your air conditioner every 3-5 years, it’s probably not a big deal. All systems develop issues from time to time. However, you should be especially concerned if you need to repair the air conditioner multiple times a year. That kind of frequent issue is often due to the wear and tear on the system becoming so great that various parts of it will start to fail in groups. At that point, you have two choices: you can replace the air conditioner one part at a time as pieces fail, or you can replace the entire system and save yourself some money and frustration.

It’s Past Its Time
Even if you take perfect care of your air conditioner, there comes a point where it is just too old to keep up anymore. On average, the ideal lifespan for an air conditioner falls between 10 and 15 years. If your air conditioner is older than that, it will likely start to develop problems similar to those we’ve already discussed. The older an air conditioner gets, the more it will cost to keep the system up and running. Even if you can get an additional few years of service out of an air conditioner past 15 years of age, you will still probably save more money by just installing a new one. Consult with a professional to determine whether or not installing a new air conditioning system is the best option for you.
