How Your Air Conditioner Compressor Can Cause a Breakdown

Air conditioning problems are always something you should keep an eye out for, but it’s especially important during the summer. This is because the added stress of keeping up with demand for cool air all day, every day, for several months absolutely increases the chances of a problem developing in the system. One of those problems is a damaged or broken compressor, which can cause a complete system breakdown and is typically expensive to repair. In order to avoid dealing with the unfortunate consequences of such a problem, take a look at how you can tell that your air conditioner compressor is in trouble.

Refrigerant Issues

Refrigerant is the lifeblood of an air conditioning system, responsible for absorbing thermal energy from inside the home and releasing it to the outside. It is not consumed during operation, but is recycled instead. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the refrigerant it needs to keep operating properly. A side effect of this is that some liquid refrigerant might make it through the evaporator coil in liquid form.

The compressor is not designed to handle liquid of any kind. It is meant only to circulate gas. If it tried to compress liquid refrigerant, the resulting pressure will cause it to become damaged or break down completely. So if you notice liquid dripping from your air conditioner, have it checked. You might be able to have the damage repaired before it can spread to the compressor.

If the compressor is damaged, it often causes the air conditioner to short-cycle. This is when the system will turn itself on and off rapidly. Short-cycling substantially increases the chances of a breakdown, and shortens the life of the system. If you notice your air conditioner doing this, have it looked at immediately. There’s a good chance that your compressor needs repairs.
