Your home’s water heater works reliably to provide hot water for showers, washing hands, and even the dishes. If you’ve noticed it’s not so efficient any longer or you’ve had to repair it a few times in the last year, it may be time to upgrade your water heater.
Doing that now may be best. That’s because when the weather changes, and it cools down outside, people start to think about water heating. The scramble to upgrade during the fall months or emergency repairs in the middle of winter isn’t a great experience. You may have to wait, and costs could rise. Instead, consider replacing your water heater now.
Why Upgrade Right Now?
If your water heater is relatively new and in good condition, there’s no need to upgrade. However, if you’ve noticed a few changes over time, like the ones below, it may be time to call a water heater technician out for a few repairs.
#1: It’s older and a problem
Most water heaters last between 10 and 12 years and then become a concern. This often means they will start leaking, or you may need to repair the pilot or motor more often. It is also more likely that they will operate less effectively, leaving you with cold showers for far too many mornings. Sometimes, repairs to older systems like this also become quite expensive, and even the louder sounds of the water heater could be so obnoxious it bugs you. If your water heater is on your mind a lot, that’s a good indication it’s time to think about a replacement.
#2: It’s no longer efficient
As water heaters get older, they lose a lot of their efficiency, meaning they cost more for you to keep them running well. Older models are also generally just less efficient than newer ones. Upgrading could mean you end up spending less on heating water for your home, and that’s always a good thing, especially when an upgrade like this could save you a lot of money in the future. If you’ve noticed increasing costs, think about an upgrade.
#3: New solutions exist
Most older-style water heaters have a large tank filled with water that needs to be warmed up over and over again throughout the day. That just sounds like a lot of work, and it is, which is why these tank systems tend to be less efficient than tankless models. Newer tankless water heaters tend to be more convenient for homes, too. There’s no delay when everyone in the family needs to take a shower within a short span of time. That’s because these water heaters heat water on demand rather than waiting for that tank to warm.
If your water heater is older, it may be time to think about an upgrade. Talk to your plumber about the option available to help you get the best solution in place before the cold weather sinks in and you’re left with very cold showers.
