Tips on Keeping Your Plumbing System in Top Shape

plumber-water-heaterIt can be tough to keep your plumbing system healthy, especially since we’re willing to bet you don’t think about it that often. Most of the system is hidden from view, and most people take it for granted until something starts to go wrong with it. If you want to keep your plumbing system in the best possible shape for as long as you can, though, you’re going to need to take a couple of proactive steps.

Schedule Inspection and Maintenance at Least Once Every Year or Two

Many of the problems that are likely to affect your plumbing system develop slowly over time. They don’t even give off warning signs until they’re pretty far along, at which point it’s too late to prevent the majority of the damage they do. If you want to protect your plumbing system from common ailments that can afflict it, you’re going to need to catch problems as early as possible. The best way to do that is with preventive maintenance.

A preventive maintenance appointment gives your technician the opportunity to locate and resolve developing issues in your plumbing system long before they have the chance to start causing damage. If you’re consistent about scheduling plumbing maintenance once every year or two, you can both reduce the odds of serious issues developing in your plumbing system and lengthen its overall lifespan at the same time.

Know When to Call for Repairs

Even with inspection and maintenance appointments, you will more than likely eventually have to deal with some sort of plumbing issue. No preventive measure is perfect when it comes to plumbing systems, unfortunately. You should know the signs that your plumbing system is experiencing some kind of issue, so that you can have it dealt with by a professional plumber as soon as possible. Common plumbing problems include:

  • Leaks: Leaks can cause quite a lot of water damage over time, even if they’re quite small. Small leaks won’t necessarily stay that way, either, so it’s important that you have any leaks you find fixed as soon as you can. Aside from the obvious sign of water dripping from places it shouldn’t, you should keep an eye out for mold rings or other water damage on your walls or floors. That might indicate that there is a leak in that area.
  • Lime Scale: Lime scale can build up in the pipes if the home is located in an area with a lot of hard water. Over time, the lime sale deposits will reduce the efficiency of the system by restricting the amount of water that can flow through the pipes at once. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice your water pressure dropping, or see lime scale in visible areas like around your faucets or in your bathtub.
